A guide to the adoption process in Colorado

There are a lot of considerations families have to weigh before deciding to go for adoption. Couples or individuals and their families have a lot to think of and act upon before the process begins. And there are many ways to get involved in the process, such as connecting with a family that also opted for adoption and learning about the preparation needed for the coming of the child. And all these steps will determine if one is ready for the actual process.

The process of adoption varies from state to state. In Colorado, both adults and children can be adopted. Through different reasons, circumstances, and circumstances, a child can be adopted into a family, while an adult can be adopted to become an heir of a person.

Children below 18 may be adopted, as well as an adult between the ages of 18 to 21, upon the approval of the court, under the Children’s Code. And under the Domestic Matters Law, any adult may be adopted to become a person’s heir. A child who’s 12 years or older and any adult must consent to the adoption for the legal adoption to be completed.

An adult who’s 21 years old can adopt. A child or an adult younger than 21 years may also do so with court approval. Married persons or those in civil unions should petition for an adoption with their spouses, unless one is the child’s natural parent, has adopted a child before, or both parties are now legally separated. No prohibition against same-sex adoptions exists, and stepparent adoption for civil union is explicitly permitted.
